Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO), along with Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA) and Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA), has introduced the Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act. This legislation, which previously passed the House in 2023, aims to strengthen U.S. relations with Taiwan amidst growing tensions with China.
Wagner stated, "The People’s Republic of China is hell-bent on exerting power over Taiwan and expanding their hostile influence to the detriment of the entire world." She emphasized that "Taiwan is a strong partner of the United States," and highlighted the importance of resisting threats from the Chinese Communist Party in the Indo-Pacific region.
Connolly remarked on the necessity for U.S. support for Taiwan, saying, "Now more than ever, it is imperative for the United States to demonstrate its unwavering support for our friend and ally, Taiwan." He expressed pride in joining his colleagues to introduce bipartisan legislation aimed at strengthening U.S.-Taiwan relations.
Lieu added that "Taiwan is a key partner to the United States and the global community," stressing that as China applies more pressure regionally and globally, it is crucial for the U.S. government to collaborate in supporting Taiwan. He expressed satisfaction in working with his colleagues on this bipartisan bill.
The proposed act mandates periodic reviews by the Department of State on guidelines for U.S.-Taiwan engagement. These reviews should clarify how guidance enhances relations between both nations while considering Taiwan's status as a democratic partner. The act also seeks opportunities to remove any remaining self-imposed restrictions on engagement with Taiwan.
