Congresswoman Ann Wagner's Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act has passed the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill aims to address concerns about China's intentions towards Taiwan and strengthen U.S.-Taiwan relations.
Wagner stated, "It is undeniable that the People’s Republic of China is the single gravest threat to our national security and has its sights set on the full-scale invasion of Taiwan. The United States must not waver in our deterrence of this threat." She emphasized the importance of standing with Pacific partners, describing her bill as a significant move towards maintaining peace through strength.
The legislation requires the Department of State to periodically review its guidelines for engagement with Taiwan. These reviews should explain how guidance deepens U.S.-Taiwan relations and highlight Taiwan's status as a democratic partner respecting universal human rights. Additionally, it seeks to ensure that U.S.-Taiwan relations contribute to peacefully resolving cross-Strait issues.
Wagner expressed hope for swift Senate action, stating she looks forward to seeing her legislation on President Trump's desk "so he can show China just how serious we are about combatting their reckless aggression."
