Congresswoman Ann Wagner, along with Congressmen Mike Turner, Wesley Bell, and Jake Auchincloss, has introduced the Upholding the Dayton Peace Agreement Through Sanctions Act. This legislation aims to impose sanctions on individuals who threaten the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The introduction of this bill coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide.
Rep. Wagner emphasized the importance of this act, stating, “The largest Bosnian community outside of Bosnia is centered here in the St. Louis area, and for years I have worked closely with them to advance our shared goal of a unified and peaceful Bosnia and Herzegovina." She condemned Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik’s actions, adding that it is crucial to halt his destabilizing activities.
Rep. Turner highlighted the significance of the Dayton Peace Accords in ending a major conflict in Europe’s history. He stated, “The United States will continue to stand with the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina to protect their sovereignty."
Rep. Bell expressed that peace requires active maintenance and that this bill seeks accountability for those undermining democracy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. "We can’t afford to look the other way while corruption and division threaten hard-won peace,” he said.
Rep. Auchincloss stressed bipartisan support for maintaining peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina: "Bad actors like Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik must not shred the institutional sinews of a peaceful and prosperous Bosnia and Herzegovina."
The proposed legislation follows similar bills introduced by Rep. Wagner that passed in 2022 and 2024. The Bosnian community in St. Louis remains invested in the region's stability due to familial ties.
