Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Ann Wagner's bipartisan Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Extension Act has been signed into law by the President. The legislation, aimed at improving U.S. efforts to prevent mass atrocity crimes, is named after the Auschwitz survivor Elie Wiesel, honoring his legacy and life's work to combat evil globally. Elisha Wiesel, son of Elie Wiesel, supports the legislation.
Congresswoman Wagner emphasized the importance of taking action against injustice, stating, “It is our responsibility to speak up and act when we see injustice. The Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Extension Act will strengthen our ongoing efforts to respond to atrocities globally and work to prevent such crises from developing at all."
She further highlighted the urgency of the matter, especially in light of recent tragic events, saying, "The world has seen unimaginable tragedies, and, especially in the wake of the brutal terror attack on October 7th in Israel, we know there is still much to be done to protect innocent civilians from depraved people who wish to wipe them from the Earth simply for who they are."
Congresswoman Wagner stressed that the legislation will enable the government to better assist vulnerable populations globally and respond promptly when time is of the essence.
